Then, when Jill moved in, she brought with her a full fresh water fish tank complete with an eel, a rainbow fish, a yoyo fish, zebra loach, cat fish, and a couple others I can't remember. I've never had a fish tank before, so it was kinda fun! The apartment felt just a bit more complete with fish in our living room for all to enjoy.
Little did we know that our apartment was destined for more...
It started when my friend Aubrey invited me to an exotic pet store that comes to Portland a couple times every year where they sell all kinds of birds, cats, puppies, lizards, etc for good prices. We wandered in and toured the animals one by one, taking several moments to enjoy each of them. I then found myself staring into the eyes of the most beautiful bird I have ever seen. A baby Green Cheeked Conure.
The owner put the bird on my shoulder and...lemme tell ya... it was love at first sight. I wanted her. Oh, how I WANTED her!!!! For hours I wandered around deep in thought trying to determine whether or not I should buy her. Finally, in the end, I decided that I just couldn't keep her. I didn't really have the money and I have Kitty. It just wouldn't be right. Meanwhile...next to me, Aubrey was also slowly falling in love with the bird. I handed the bird over to her and walked away for a while, a bit sad that I wasn't able to keep her but feeling at peace because I knew deep down it was the right thing for me to do.
About an hour later I came back and...to my COMPLETE surprise...Aubrey had bought the bird! My jaw just about hit the floor. "Aubrey!' I laughed. "You bought my bird!" "I know!" she giggled back. "I couldn't stop myself! She was too adorable to just LEAVE her there!" And so it was...Aubrey became the official owner of the perfect bird. But it was agreed that I would be able to take the bird to my place every so often because...after all...I was the one who fell in love with her first!
The first few weeks came and went, and soon it became my turn to have the bird for a while. Me and Rach went to pick her up. I wasn't sure how long I would have her but Aubrey told me that trading her back and forth wouldn't be good for her and that she would need a permanent home. She also said that she would love to keep her, but she wasn't sure if she had enough room or time to completely 100% devote to her. Understanding that it was pretty much up to me to decide on the birds fate, I took her to my apartment. I thought hard and I finally came to the sad conclusion that I would not be able to take her in. I wanted her yes...but deep deep down I knew it wouldn't be right. By morning I was ready to give her back to Aubrey.
But then....lo and behold...the unthinkable happened. While the bird was staying at our place Rachel had unexpectedly found herself head over heals in LOVE-LOVE with her. When I told her I wasn't going to keep her, Rach wouldn't hear of it. "I will make it so she will have to stay here!" she declared, her voice all but dripping with passion.
And so it was. We found ourselves yet another addition to our growing "family". A Green Cheeked Conure Rachel lovingly named after the Greek Goddess "Persephane". (Percy for short).
So now each of us has our own pet to take care of. I have Kitty, Jill has her fish, and now Rachel has Persephane.
Who would have thought? :D
